Vibration White Finger and Dermatitis

Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) more commonly known as Vibration White Finger (VWF) is a condition caused by the frequent pro-longed use of hand-held vibrating tools. Raynaud’s syndrome can also be a term used to represent discoloration of the fingers and hands.

Examples of such hand held tools causing VWF are:

  • Jackhammers
  • Stihl saws
  • Vibrating rollers
  • Wackers
  • Drills
  • Powered saws
  • Grinders
  • Polishers

Examples of industries in which the use of hand-held vibrating tools is common are:

  • Construction
  • Fabrication
  • Foundry/Ironworks
  • Road maintenance
  • Vehicle boy repairs

Examples of symptoms you can experience if you have VWF include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling and pins and needles
  • Weakened grip
  • Manual dexterity problems
  • Cold white fingers (Raynaud’s syndrome)
  • Loss of sensation

DERMATITIS CLAIMS

There are various conditions that can affect the skin as a result of exposure to irritants in the workplace. The most common is dermatitis. Dermatitis can cause the affected area to become:

  • Red
  • Dry
  • Inflamed
  • Blistered
  • Cracked
  • Thickened

The most commonly affected areas are the hands.
